WELCOME SANDRA KUHNS
SENIOR CENTER ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR

We welcome Sandra Kuhns to our department as the new Activities Coordinator at the Indianola Area Senior Center. Sandy may be a familiar face to some, as she worked with the Winifred Law Opportunity Center for 12 years as Adult Life Skills Instructor/Recreation and Leisure Coordinator. She and her husband moved to Indianola in 1988 and have three grown children, all of whom live out of state. She loves to travel and enjoys movies, music, and performing (has portrayed Mae West at numerous events). She especially enjoys planning events and trips. Her motto is “lifetime learning”, and her energy and enthusiasm for the job are a great addition to our staff. We look forward to her creative ideas for program and activities at the Senior Center.

PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION

The Indianola Parks and Recreation Commission has monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of each month. All meetings are open to the public and are held in the Training Room in the Indianola Municipal Building at 7:30 p.m. Anyone who would like to address the Commission needs to be put on the agenda by calling the Parks and Recreation Department (961-9420) by the Thursday before each meeting.

The Parks and Recreation Commission is made up of six members from the community appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. The purpose of the Commission is to set policies; advise the City Council on needed parks and recreation programs; oversee the city recreation programs and park areas; and plan, acquire and develop recreation facilities, parks and open space areas to meet future needs as the city grows.

The two newest members, Mary Kay Hamell and Eric VanDorin, were appointed to the Commission for 3-year terms beginning January 1, 2000. Mary Kay is a banker at the Indianola Brenton Bank and enjoys sports activities. She is married to Ron Hamell and has a daughter, 2 step daughters and a step son. Eric is a teacher at the Indianola Irving Elementary School and likes sports and working with youth

NONRESIDENT FEES

The Indianola residents make a significant contribution to the financing and operation of the Indianola Parks and Recreation Department through city property taxes. These taxes are paid whether or not individuals participate in programs or use facilities. To ensure equality, nonresidents (those living outside the city limits) will be charged a nonresident fee in addition to the program or facility fee.

REFUND POLICY

Refunds/credits for recreation programs will be processed upon request in accordance with the following policy:

Full refunds/credits will be made upon cancellation of a class or activity by the Parks and Recreation Department.

Full refunds/credits will be granted to individuals if prior to class/activity deadline or one week prior to the beginning of a class/activity that doesn’t have a published deadline.

Because the decision to maintain classes is based on the enrollment at the first class, refunds/credits are not guaranteed after the first session. Refunds/credits requested less than one week prior to the beginning of a class/activity may be granted only for illness or medical reasons or other unavoidable circumstances. A physician’s verification will be required in writing. The request must be made within seven (7) working days of the unavoidable circumstance. Refunds/credit will be prorated.

No refunds/credits will be granted after a program/activity is half completed.
