Building Permit

A Building Permit is required to erect, construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, improve, remove, convert or demolish any building or structure.

Special Note: Persons must:
1) file an application identifying the work to be covered by the permit,
2) provide a description, preferable by street address, and
3) indicate the indended use. Include plans, diagrams and specifications, as required by the Building Official. Issuance of a Building Permit may require previous approval of a Site Plan
Inspections: All construction or work for which the permit is required is subject to inspection by the Building Official. The applicant is responsible for contacting the Building & Zoning Department at appropriate intervals.
Timing: Permit is usually granted in two to three days

Certificate of Occupancy

A Certificate of Occupancy is required to use or occupy (or permit the use or occupancy of) any building or premise for which a Building Permit has been issued. This includes single or two-family dwellings and accessory structures.

Electrical Permit

An Electrical Permit is required to install, alter, repair, replace or remodel any electrical system, as established by the City Code.

Special Note: A person must file an application, along with plans detailing the work to be covered by the permit. The plans are reviewed by the Building Official before approval. All work must be done by an electrician licensed by the City of Indianola.
Exception: Owner-occupied, singe family dwellings may be exempt.
Inspections: All work for which a permit is required is subject to inspection by the Bulding Official. The applicant is responsible for contacting the Building and Zoning Department at appropriate intervals during construction.
Timing: Permit is usually granted the same day.

Moving/Demolition Permit

A Moving/Demolition Permit is required to demolish a building or portion thereof or to move a building from one location to another across private or public property.

Special Note: An application with proof of insurance, plans, specifications and diagrams is to be submitted for review by the Building Official prior to issuance of the permit
Inspections: All work for which a permit is required is subject to inspection by the Building Officials. The applicant is responsible for contacting the Building and Zoning Department at the appropriate intervals
Timing: Permit is usually granted within one to two day.
Fee: $10.00/ permit

Plumbing Permit

A Plumbing Permit is required to install, alter, repair, replace or remodel any plumbing system as established by the City Code.

Special Note: Persons must file an application, along with plans that adequately detail the work to covered by the permit. The plans are reviewed by the Building Official before approval. All work must be done by a master/journeyman plumber, licensed by the City of Indianola
Inspections All work for which a permit is required is subject to inspection by the Building Official. The applicant is responsible for contacting the Building and Zoning Department at appropriate intervals during construction
Timing: Permit is usually granted the same day.

Satellite Dish

A Building Permit is required to install a satellite receiving antenna

Swimming Pool Permit

A Swimming Pool Permit is required for the installation of any above-ground or below-ground pool with a capacity of more than 5,000 gallons

Special Note: The City Code requires swimming pools be completely protected by an appropriate barrier(fence) of not less than six feet in height. A site plan is also required for the location of the pool on the site
Inspections All construction or work for which a permit is required is subject to inspection by the Building Official. The applicant is responsible for contacting the Building and Zoning Department at appropriate intervals during construction

Plantings in Street Parking

A permit is required for any plantings, except flowers, in the street parking area. Flowers must meet height restrictions.

Special Note: The City Code requires certain types of trees for certain areas. See the City Ordinance for specifics.
