Clerical Supervisor

Definition:

This is a Supervisory/Clerical Position involving the supervision/management of day-to-day operations of the Police Department. The position involves a variety of duties including the supervision of all other clerical personnel, data processing, limited accounting, public relations, and clerical organization. Position requires confidentiality, exercise in independent judgment, organization and management skills.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Acts as a receptionist greeting and screening visitors and callers and making referrals to appropriate contacts or resolving the matter.

  • Performs data entry, typing, filing, and other clerical duties as directed; reviews information for correctness, enters information, and prepares reports.

  • Prepares, completes and submits required reports to other state agencies and elsewhere as directed.

  • Maintains appointment schedules for supervisory officers.

  • Maintains office supplies.

  • Performs duties relative to confidential data and information.

  • Maintains data processing system.

  • Assists with the preparation of studies, reports, and annual statistics and other reports.

  • Maintains scheduling for all clerical personnel.

  • Prepares and oversees payroll of all clerical personnel.

  • Trains other clerical personnel as appropriate.

  • Serves as a contact with hardware and software vendors.

  • Maintains departmental computers/network in working order.

  • Makes decisions relative to data processing procedures.

  • Ensures that the office is clean and in good order.

  • Assist with/search prisoners as directed.

  • Act as a matron as directed.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Immediate Supervisor: Captain or as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation. Considerable knowledge of modern office procedures and equipment. Working knowledge of basic bookkeeping and filing procedures. Considerable knowledge of Microsoft applications, including Microsoft Word, Access and Excel. Able to keep departmental computers in good working order. Able to quickly grasp Microsoft police reporting software and practices. Ability to establish and maintain clerical records. Ability to effectively supervise other employees and maintain working relationships with all city employees. Cordial attitude/demeanor towards the public.

Acceptable Experience and Training;

Graduation from high school, including or supplemented by college courses is desirable. Experience working in office environment. Supervisory experience is desirable. Any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.

Required Physical Activities:

Driving, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, walking, lifting, reaching, talking, hearing, grasping, and finger dexterity, repetitive motions.

Physical Characteristics of Work:

Work involves sitting approximately 80% of the time, standing approximately 8% of the time, walking approximately 8% of the time and driving approximately 4% of the time. Requires the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force continuously, and up to 50 pounds of force infrequently to lift or otherwise move objects.

Vision Requirements:

The minimum standard for use with those whose work deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal and extensive reading.

Environmental Conditions:

Work is performed in a typical office or administrative environment. The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse Environmental Conditions.

Patrol Officer

Reports To:            Sergeant

Function:  Performs under direction; to participate in the work of the department whether assigned to general patrol or special assignment, and to do related work as required, within departmental SOP, Rules and Regulations, Code of Iowa, and/or the Ordinances of the City of Indianola. Performs police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Performs duties that benefit the city organization and the City of Indianola.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Senior officer on duty assumes command in the absence of the Chief, Captain, or Sergeants
  • Patrols assigned area by car and on-foot to prevent crime and detect violations
  • Arrest violators
  • Familiarizes self with patrol area and people residing in the area
  • Notes suspicious people and takes appropriate actions
  • Reports to scenes of accidents and completes necessary reports
  • Renders first-aid to victims
  • Directs traffic
  • Investigate circumstances of crime
  • Questions witnesses
  • Makes court appearances as instructed
  • Maintains court appearances as instructed
  • Maintains order in crowds
  • Maintains department equipment and vehicles as dictated
  • Completes reports as specified by department SOP and Rules and Regualations
  • Performs public relations duties when requested
  • Performs crime prevention efforts as necessary
  • Assist other agencies
  • Participate in training as directed
  • Other duties as required

Entry Requirements and Skills:

  • High School graduation or equivalent
  • Successful completion of all courses required for state certification

Light Equipment Operator

Definition:

Operates dump truck and other light automotive equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with such operations.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates a truck in connection with the transportation of rock, blacktop, dirt, salt, sand, gravel, brush and supplies.
  • Operates sander, jackhammer, snowplow, backhoe, sweeper, end loader, etc.
  • Plows snow and sands streets. 
  • Pours concrete.
  • Sets posts and/or attaches signs. 
  • Cleans and repairs storm sewer boxes and lines. 
  • Removes dead animals from streets.
  • Services and performs minor repairs on automotive equipment. 
  • Loads or unloads dirt, asphalt, concrete and other material into or from a truck. 
  • Patches and blacktops streets.
  • Shovels snow; 
  • Performs various routine yard work.
  • Performs a variety of manual labor tasks.
  • Participates in the CDL Drug and Alcohol Testing program. 

Immediate Supervisor: Superintendent Street Department

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Good knowledge of traffic and safety rules and regulations.
  • Skill in the operation of tractors, trucks and other automotive equipment under all types of weather conditions. 
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. 
  • Mechanical aptitude. 
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Dependability and physical strength and stamina.

Acceptable Experience and Training:

  • Some experience in the operation of tractors, trucks or other automotive equipment.
  • Graduation from high school.
  • Possession of a valid CDL with air brake certification, and experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Required Physical Activities: 

Driving, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

General Physical Characteristics: 

  • The work involves sitting 5 percent of the time. 
  • Sitting and using arm/leg controls 25 percent of the time. 
  • Standing (but not walking) 15 percent of the time.
  • Standing and walking 55 percent of the time. 
  • Frequently lifting objects up to 10 pounds, routinely lifting objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally lifting objects over 50 pounds.

Vision Requirements: 

The minimum standard for use with those whose work deals largely with reading, visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, operation of machines (including inspection).

Environmental Conditions: 

The work is performed inside and/or outside and includes being exposed to extreme heat/cold, noise, vibration, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, oils, confined spaces, and darkness or poor lighting conditions, isolation.

Salary Class: Range 19
