Street Department - Ed Yando

It’s a clean sweep

Keeping the streets of Indianola clean of snow and debris is only one of the many jobs Ed Yando handles for the city.

Yando, Street Department Superintendent for the last three years, also works with street inspections, concrete and asphalt planning, budget, billing, traffic signs and maintenance. His crew trims trees, cleans intakes and storm sewers, maintains the city’s brush dump and paints the school crossing areas and the parking lines on the square.

No stranger to the department, Yando has worked the streets of Indianola for a total of 11 years. He’s the one to talk to if there are problems such as dirty or unplowed streets or signs that need replacing or fixing.

“I like working at the city,” Yando said of his job. “I like the challenge, the people, the employees.”

Things have changed quite a bit in the street department since Yando started. He said there are more concrete and asphalt repairs, better equipment and overall better maintenance. A recent move to a new shop for the department has also helped, providing for more room for employees and equipment alike.

His crew consists of six year-round employees. But that number doubles during the summer with the hiring of five to six additional employees. There’s always work to be done, especially in a growing town like Indianola.

“There are just lots of little things to keep us busy. As the city grows there are more streets to plow and signs to put up,” Yando said.

When he is able to get away from work, Yando said he enjoys riding his motorcycle, a Harley-Davidson, and hunting deer and coyote.
