City Ordinance #1015 - Snow Emergency Ordinance

prohibits parking on any public street or alley during a snow emergency parking ban.

Please note that this ordinance was amended in 2004 and the fine has increased to $35 per occurrence.

A ban is in effect when two or more inches of snow or ice has fallen or is predicted by the National Weather Service. The ban shall continue for the duration of the storm and for at least forty-eight hours past the end of the storm or until streets are fully opened after plowing.

If your vehicle is in violation of the snow emergency parking ban, you will be subject to a $35.00 parking ticket and/or your vehicle may be towed at your expense.

Payment of a ticket is due 10 days from the date it is issued. Failure to pay a parking ticket will result in a warrant for arrest. If towed, full payment of ticket, towing fees and any impound fees are required to have the vehicle released to the owner.

A snow emergency parking ban will be posted on the government access cable channel 7, the City of Indianola web site, announced on area TV and radio news stations, or can be confirmed anytime by contacting the Indianola Police Department at 961-9400.

Please take special note of this ordinance and plan accordingly. Thank you for your cooperation.

Winter Driving Tips

The City of Indianola must be ready to face the worst for the 2007-2008 winter season. The fact is that we can never fully know what to expect in a winter season. Whatever we may be facing - a mild winter, a severe winter or something in between - our situation calls for us to be ready at all times.

Motorists are asked to keep some tips in mind for winter driving.
• Clear snow and ice from all windows before you drive.
• Pay attention. Don’t try to out-drive the conditions.
• Leave plenty of room for stopping.
• Leave room for plows. Stay back at least 200 feet. is better than the road in front of it.
• Watch out for slippery bridge decks, even when the rest of the road is in good condition.
• Slow down!

In general, when traveling during the winter months, motorists should always be prepared for a variety of roadway and weather conditions. While the City of Indianola is making every effort to maintain the highways in the best condition possible, conditions and weather can change rapidly, resulting in a more challenging travel experience.
