Running for Elected Office
To hold an elected city office in Indianola, a
candidate must be an eligible elector, meeting the same qualifications required
to vote and be a resident of Indianola. If running for a council seat
representing a specific ward of the city, the candidate must be a resident of
that ward.
To place their name on the election ballot, the
candidate must be nominated by petition. The petition forms are available from
the Indianola City Clerk’s office or the Warren Count Auditor’s office. All
candidates must complete and submit an affidavit of candidacy with their
nomination papers.
Candidates may withdraw a nomination by filing
a request with the City Clerk. In addition, individuals may protest a
candidate’s nomination papers or eligibility by filing a written objection with
the City Clerk.
Candidates are advised to
understand and adhere to all campaign laws. Common campaign violations include:

A candidate cannot
accept contributions

A candidate must place
the words “paid for by” and the name and address of the person paying for the
material on all printed political advertising.

A candidate must ensure
that campaign signs are not placed on corporate property or any governmental
property including the public right-of-way between the sidewalk and curb.

A candidate may only use
campaign funds for campaign purposes.
