Running for Elected Office

To hold an elected city office in Indianola, a candidate must be an eligible elector, meeting the same qualifications required to vote and be a resident of Indianola.  If running for a council seat representing a specific ward of the city, the candidate must be a resident of that ward.

To place their name on the election ballot, the candidate must be nominated by petition.  The petition forms are available from the Indianola City Clerk’s office or the Warren Count Auditor’s office.  All candidates must complete and submit an affidavit of candidacy with their nomination papers.

Candidates may withdraw a nomination by filing a request with the City Clerk.  In addition, individuals may protest a candidate’s nomination papers or eligibility by filing a written objection with the City Clerk.

Candidates are advised to understand and adhere to all campaign laws.  Common campaign violations include:

  • A candidate cannot accept contributions

  • A candidate must place the words “paid for by” and the name and address of the person paying for the material on all printed political advertising.

  • A candidate must ensure that campaign signs are not placed on corporate property or any governmental property including the public right-of-way between the sidewalk and curb.

  • A candidate may only use campaign funds for campaign purposes.
