Waste Water Department

The Indianola Waste Water treatment plant is located just north of town on Hoover Street.  While the treatment of waste water is not a popular topic of discussion, the importance of its proper handling and disposal can't be overlooked!

The current plant was completed in 1980 at a cost of $12 million dollars.  As our population has increased over the years, the need for expansion and improvement of the plant is eminent.  Measures have been taken by the City Council to implement programs such as the Infiltration and Inflow Program to prolong the necessity of costly expansions.  The I&I Program alone has reduced the number of gallons of treated water by over 45 million - that equals as savings of 10 days of plant operation costs!

The treatment plant includes several unique features in the treatment process that provide and efficient and economical operations.  The plant has a modern, well equipped laboratory, providing for continuous testing of waste water throughout the treatment process.  This testing assures proper plant operation and compliance with discharge permits.

The department's personnel, under the direction of the superintendent, maintain all aspect of the treatment plant operations.  In addition, they inspect and maintain the system's infrastructure throughout the city, jetting lines on a regular schedule.  As part of the I&I Program, they routinely view system connections and conduct smoke bombing and water flow checks to find faulty and leaking services.
