2007 Citizen Survey

2007 Citizen Survey (skip to results)

Why a Survey?
Every other year, considerable effort is put into a large scale solicitation of information from our citizens. The data is compiled and compared to information obtained in previous years. Input from a random group is the best way to measure many of the critical, key elements of having a successful, progressive community. We've learned more about what makes our community attractive to residents and what are major issues of concern that need to be addressed. Both of these factors help us more effectively market our community to both potential residents and businesses, as well as better serve current citizens.

How is the Survey Used?
The city council and mayor use the information provided by the survey responses to help them set project priorities and responsibly allocate budget funds. A good example is traffic issues. As part of both the 2003 and 2005 surveys, traffic flow and traffic signals have been indicated as a public priority. In response, city officials have worked with state and federal agencies to obtain funding for improvements to the intersection at highways 65/69 and 92. Additionally, Hwy.

Categories
Including demographic information, the survey was comprised of 8 separate categories:

  • Services (ratings for services provided by all departments, plus traffic flows)
  • Capital Improvement Priorities (from New Fire Station to Historic Preservation)
  • Sources of Information (where do residents get their information)
  • Community Characteristics (rate opportunities for activities, city government input, jobs, etc.)
  • Participation (how are residents using programs such as Library, Parks & Rec, recycling, etc.)
  • Citizen Experience (interactions with employees and city officials as well as opinions on various topics)
  • Demographics (provides responder statistics such as age, gender, income, education, etc.)

Complete Survey Results
We want residents to know we listen to what they have to say and we do our best to respond. Due to funding and the jurisdiction of various forms of government, projects may not always progress as quickly as we'd like. However, improvements are continually being pursued.  As affirmed in our city's Mission Statement, the goal of city officials and staff is to provide citizens with quality and ample services at a fair and affordable price, to improve the livability in our community and to make each citizen proud to be a part of the City of Indianola. The Citizen Survey is one tool that helps us accomplish these goals.  The complete 2007 survey results are available in a PDF format.
